Here we go then readers. Upcyling? What that's all about then? Used be recycling or perhaps 'making do'. What ever it is I love it! I really enjoy being able to reuse some old timber. Sometimes it even talks to me.
Well not in the literal sense but when I was asked to make this washbasin stand using a piece of pitch pine that had clearly previously been used as ceiling joist or beam I couldn't help but wonder where it been and what it had seen. Over a Victorian mill or workhouse where our forebears slaved over hot machinery? In a bakery or shop? What stories could it tell? Wherever it been its so nice to be able to reuse it and give it a new home. This also provided a solution for the owners as a plumbing oversight had left the pipes in wall right where the brackets needed to be for the basin. Moral of that is to read instructions first-but then we've all not done that haven't we?
Hope that's given you food for thought next time you have a piece of old wood, don't just condemn to skip or bonfire. One persons old wood is another's upcycled.
